Understanding Basic Suspension Components

Common Suspension Design

It could be said that the practice of adding suspension to wheeled vehicles couldn’t have been far behind the invention of the wheel. It probably didn’t take early pioneers in transportation long to see the need for a way to relieve the force of bumps in the road (or lack thereof). Since that time man has seen a multitude of possibilities for solving this simple problem. Modern vehicles have become somewhat preferential as to the type of suspension they carry because let’s face it, some things just work better than others! Some commonly used suspension designs are illustrated in brief detail below.

Coil Spring

The coil spring is a helical shock absorbing device that absorbs energy from a vertical force or shock between two surfaces. Coil springs are some of the most widely used components of modern day suspension systems because they are easily adapted for use in many arrangements and variations. For more information visit the Wikipedia page on coil springs here.

Leaf Spring

The leaf spring is one of the oldest types of spring, dating back to medieval times. It’s most practical application is in wheeled vehicles, where the leaf spring is suspended from the frame of the vehicle and the axle is supported at the center. Until the advent of the coil spring the leaf spring was the most dominantly used type of suspension in most self-powered vehicles and also in towed vehicles. For more information visit the Wikipedia page on leaf springs here.

Torsion Bar

The torsion bar is a slightly different suspension design that utilizes a large hardened metal rod to absorb the movement of a wheel hub assembly. A torsion bar twists along its lateral axis as the suspension flexes and provides the ‘spring’ in the vehicles suspension. Torsion bar setups have advantages over coil and leaf springs in adjust-ability, durability, and longer travel. For more information visit the Wikipedia page on torsion bars here.
